Description
The Weeknd (Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, producer, and actor, one of the most successful artists of the 21st century. He was born in Toronto to Ethiopian parents. The first language he spoke was Amharic, and music became a way for him to express himself and, in his own words, an escape during the difficult years of his adolescence.
In late 2010, Abel anonymously posted several songs to YouTube under the pseudonym The Weeknd. In 2011, three mixtapes were released—House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence—which received rave reviews from critics and quickly turned the enigmatic artist into one of the most talked-about figures in the R&B genre. In 2013, he released his debut studio album, Kiss Land.
True global success came to the artist with the album Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), which topped the Billboard 200 chart and gave listeners the hits "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills." His next work, Starboy (2016), cemented his superstar status and included a collaboration with Daft Punk. The Weeknd's discography continued with the EP My Dear Melancholy (2018) and a trilogy that included After Hours (2020), Dawn FM (2022), and Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025).
It was with After Hours that the era of the track "Blinding Lights" began - one of the most successful songs in chart history. Other iconic compositions include "Save Your Tears," "Starboy," "Heartless," "Often," and "Timeless." The artist has won four Grammy Awards and dozens of other accolades.
Visuals have always played a key role in The Weeknd's work. His videos are distinguished by their cinematic quality and well-thought-out storylines, and his concert shows are transformed into full-fledged theatrical productions. The artist has also ventured into film: in 2025, the psychological thriller "Hurry Up Tomorrow" was released, serving as a companion piece to the album of the same name.
